Landskrona by Foot: Coastal Trails and Culinary Treasures

On a warm summer day, we take the bus to Ålabodarna and begin our hike southward on the Skåneleden trail. Along the way, we want to experience nature and history – but also enjoy good food and drink. It turns out we’ve come to the right place.

The bus stops a fair bit up the country road leading down to Ålabodarna. We start our hike by heading down towards the sea, and after a few kilometres the idyllic fishing village appears before us. Small, picturesque houses line the streets, surrounded by lovely gardens with the waves of the Öresund strait as a soothing backdrop. It feels as if time has stood still.

Seaside Relaxation

By the harbour lies Ålabodarnas Hamnkrog, open during the summer season. Here, you can sit down and enjoy the view of the strait. It’s a warm day, and we’re eager to swim – so we jump into the sea from one of the nearby bathing piers. We then continue our hike along the water until a short uphill stretch leads us to Rustningshamnen. On the ground, you can still find remnants of bricks from the old brickworks that operated here in the late 1800s, during the peak of the brick industry.

The hike continues over Sandbergen and through the valleys of Hilleshög. The blooming yellow rapeseed fields contrast beautifully with the blue sky, creating a surreal and stunning landscape. The highest hills reach 100 metres above sea level, offering breathtaking views of Öresund. In the Hilleshögs Dalar nature reserve, you’ll find several notable bird species, such as swifts, sea eagles, and peregrine falcons.

Along the way, you’ll encounter not only beautiful nature but also a piece of Swedish military history. Even today, you can see the concrete bunkers that are part of the Per Albin Line, built during World War II to protect Sweden from a feared invasion.

Flavours of the World

Eventually, the terrain flattens out, and we continue with the sea on one side and Landskrona’s golf course on the other. The hilly terrain starts to make itself felt in our legs, and lunch is beginning to sound very appealing.

Before reaching Borstahusen harbour, we stop at the lunch restaurant Kvarteret Erikstorp by the golf course. They favour local and organic ingredients in their cooking, creating dishes with inspiration from a variety of cuisines. Today’s special is a southern French fish stew that delights all the senses with its vibrant colours, rich flavours, and enticing aroma.

As we digest our meal, the hike continues through Borstahusen – a fishing village dating back to the 18th century. The houses from that era are still preserved and line the streets like historical gems. On grassy areas known as “stejlebackar,” fishermen once hung their nets to dry. Today, clotheslines have taken their place, and residents often hang their laundry out to dry during the summer.

Down at Borstahusen harbour, we’re tempted by dessert and settle in at Kompass Mat & Bar to enjoy a delicious crème brûlée with fresh berries. Afterwards, a nap on the sandy beach at Cement and a refreshing dip in the sea beckons.

Two person walking

Historic Coffee Break

Nicely cooled off, we continue our hike along the coast and, after a few kilometres, arrive at Landskrona Citadel. The citadel is one of the best-preserved fortresses from the 16th century in the Nordic region and Sweden’s only preserved caponier fortress. Inside the citadel grounds we find lush greenery, a large playground, and several small shops where local artisans run their businesses. We choose to have coffee at Konditori Citadellet. On the spacious outdoor terrace, you can sit close to the moat and admire the castle up close while enjoying homemade pastries and coffee.

No summer day is truly complete without ice cream. So, we end our hike at Dockside Glass, located at Nyhamn in Landskrona. Here, you can explore a variety of flavours and toppings – only your imagination sets the limits.

A wonderful hike comes to an end. One thing is clear: anyone who thought Skåne was flat was mistaken. This hike offers just the right amount of challenge, with culinary experiences close at hand as a delightful bonus.
