The National Cycle Route – Sydkustleden
The national cycle route Sydkustleden stretches from Simrishamn to Helsingborg. The entire route covers a total of 900 kilometres of varied cycling. The trail passes through Landskrona’s charming city centre, past the picturesque fishing village of Borstahusen, and continues north towards Glumslöv, where you’ll be treated to a stunning view.
In the city centre, don’t miss a visit to the Citadel, a 16th-century fortress. Right next to the castle you’ll also find Landskrona Art Gallery, Landskrona Museum, and Rothoff’s Museum Allotment – the only one of its kind in Sweden. The city centre also offers a variety of restaurants, cafés and shops.
The cycle path from the city centre to Borstahusen runs along the sea. It’s lovely to stroll around old Borstahusen, where some buildings date back to the 18th century. In the harbour, you can take a dip in the sea or enjoy a delicious meal at one of the restaurants in the picturesque marina. While in Borstahusen, be sure to visit the Pumphuset Art Gallery and Museum.
The journey then continues north towards Helsingborg. This part of the route features a gentle ascent, but the reward is a viewpoint offering a truly extraordinary panorama of the Öresund strait, the island of Ven, and rolling valleys.
Speaking of Ven, biking is a popular way to explore the island. The island’s size is perfect for cycling, and you can easily pedal around its circumference in a day. The ride itself is pleasant, with alternating downhill and uphill sections for variety, breathtaking views, and the ocean breeze as a constant companion. Just watch out for the pheasants. As any local will tell you, their survival instincts aren’t exactly top-notch.
If you get tired during your ride, Ven offers a multitude of excellent cafés and restaurants to stop at for a bite to eat or just a quick drink. Or why not bring a picnic basket and enjoy a meal somewhere along the island’s picturesque coast?
You can rent one of the classic yellow bikes from Vens Cykeluthyrning, headquartered right by the harbour where the ferry docks. Pro tip: during the summer months, it’s a good idea to book ahead. Besides ordinary bicycles, they offer bikes for children and bicycle trailers. They even have tandem bicycles for visitors who want to try something new!
